Toes, Heels & Calls
31 March @ 20:00 - 21:30
FreeImmerse yourself in the energy and intensity of flamenco through drawing! This guided session will take place during a live rehearsal with a professional dance ensemble, challenging students to capture the fleeting motion and raw expression of flamenco.
For us, their warm-up will also serve as ours. We will begin with very quick sketches marking key movements or points of trajectory/flexion. Later, we will focus on how the foot connects with the ground and how the legs move in response to each rhythm. Since these are professional flamenco dancers, their transitions will be very fast, creating an unattainable dynamism—this is the essence of the workshop.
The goal is to develop a personal drawing technique that captures something ephemeral, something we do not have time to fully translate. Flamenco is an expression of collective drama, exposing the duality between joy and suffering, transforming the dancer into an animal-like presence. It humanizes them when it turns them into warriors, and most importantly, it gives them a sense of belonging—to a cause, to an identity, to a species.
Recommended materials:
- Graphite – 3 different hardness levels
- Colored pencils – 3 colors
- Markers – 3 colors
- Black pen (e.g., BIC)
- One 50 x 70 cm sheet of paper
As we have been granted the use of this space, it is important to emphasise that wet techniques are not allowed.
The room can be a little chilly when you’re not moving, as it’s a rehearsal space, so long sleeves are recommended for those who are more sensitive to the cold.
The rehearsal structure is approximately as follows:
- 10 minutes of warm-up and arm exercises
- 10 minutes of footwork
- 1 hour and 10 minutes of choreography. Una de las coreografías será con mantón.
