Guest lecture – Janelle Simmonds

16 November 2007 @ 8:30 - 12:00

November 16, 2007 at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm

We will be holding a special two-part seminar here at the college called “Interpreting the Visual World: Analyzing Images”

In particular the seminar is designed for students studying graphic design, interactive media, as well as marketing/advertising/PR.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED (Please email jeff@praguecollege stating your intention to attend one or both of the talks).
This seminar is open to all Prague College students and is free of charge. For anyone who is not a member of staff or student, it will cost 500 CZK per session.

Part 1 November 16, 9:30 am
Still Images (using print or web advertising)

This seminar focuses on image analysis, emphasizing how form, content and context are ‘codes’ that help us interpret messages. Ill touch on a range of subjects, from composition, framing, angle and lighting to use of colour, dress and non-verbal communication, as well as how meaning is found in the juxtaposition of words and images. Please bring a colour advertisement with you, preferably with people in it.

Part 2 November 16, 1 pm
Moving Images (using film scenes)

Part 2 expands on the theory and applies image analysis to moving images with sound, using film scenes. The seminar incorporates some art/design concepts that students may already know, but the discussion takes more of a media/communications and image analysis approach. The seminar is designed to be very interactive, with discussions and activities. The objective is to get students to think more critically about the messages they see, and create, by identifying and reading the various elements of an image/series of images.

Both seminars will be led by Janelle (Powell) Simmonds, Programme Leader at Nottingham Trent International College and Prague College lecturer
