The last of our Architectural Walks will follow the events of the first week of May 1945. We will visit memorial places and significant spots from this very recent period of Czech history.
The meeting place is in front of the Český Rozhlas building (Czech Radio).
Detailed route overview:
Our route for this walk takes us from the outside of the Český Rozhlas building (A) on Vinohradská street. We learn about the events of the first week of May 1945 and visit the buildings that played such an important role including the school at Na Smetance.
We will see memorial plaques to those who died in the battles for the Sokol (C ), Czech Radio (D) and in the aerial bombing of the synagogue on Sázavská (H). We take in the great Church of the Sacred Heart (Jože Plečnik, 1928-1932) in Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad, on our way to the functionalist Hussite church by Pavel Janák on Dykova street which was used as an alternative broadcast station during the battle for the Radio broadcasts. In the street named after her, we learn about the actress Anna Letenska, and the role she and her husband played in Operation Anthropoid. The walk will end in Náměstí Míru.
